A 1925 work by Otto Dix, capturing the stark social reality of Weimar Germany through the lens of New Objectivity.
Otto Dix, a central figure of the New Objectivity movement in Weimar Germany, produced this work in 1925. The painting depicts three figures positioned against a backdrop that suggests an urban interior or a shop window. Dix employs a harsh, unflinching gaze to document the social conditions of the period. The figures are rendered with exaggerated features, reflecting the artist's rejection of idealised forms in favour of a raw, satirical examination of contemporary life.
The composition is structured with a rigid, almost theatrical quality. Each woman occupies a distinct space, yet they are linked by their shared environment and the calculated artifice of their appearance. The use of oil and tempera on wood allows for a specific texture, contributing to the clinical, sharp-edged aesthetic that defines much of Dix's output during the mid-1920s. The colour palette is deliberate, utilising contrasting tones to draw attention to the clothing and the artificiality of the setting.
Dix often focused on the fringes of society, including war veterans, the impoverished, and those involved in the sex trade. This work functions as a visual record of the moral and social climate in post-war Germany. By avoiding sentimentality, the artist forces the viewer to confront the reality of his subjects without the mediation of traditional aesthetic conventions. The inclusion of specific details, such as the accessories and the decorative elements in the background, provides a sense of place while maintaining the detached, observational quality characteristic of the artist's approach to portraiture and social commentary.
