A dramatic 1857 religious composition by Léon Bonnat, depicting the biblical resurrection of Lazarus through precise anatomical form and controlled lighting.
Léon Bonnat painted this work in 1857, during his formative years in Paris. It depicts the biblical narrative of Jesus raising Lazarus from the dead. The composition follows the conventions of the French Academy, prioritising anatomical precision and a clear, dramatic arrangement of figures. Christ stands at the centre, his arms extended in a gesture of command, while Lazarus emerges from the shadows of the tomb on the left. The figures surrounding the scene display a range of reactions, from awe to devotion, rendered with the technical rigour expected of the period.
Bonnat employs a controlled palette, using deep shadows to contrast with the illuminated figures. This chiaroscuro effect directs the viewer's attention to the interaction between Christ and the newly awakened Lazarus. The drapery of the garments is handled with careful attention to weight and texture, reflecting the artist's training in the classical tradition. The background features a muted, mountainous horizon, which provides a sense of scale without distracting from the primary action in the foreground.
This painting is an early example of Bonnat's ability to manage large-scale narrative compositions. While he later became known primarily for his portraiture, this work demonstrates his early focus on historical and religious themes. The lighting is deliberate, creating a theatrical atmosphere that aligns with the mid-nineteenth-century preference for staged, emotive storytelling. The work remains a clear example of the technical standards upheld by the École des Beaux-Arts during the mid-nineteenth century, where clarity of form and narrative legibility were paramount.
