A serene 1897 oil painting by Frits Thaulow, capturing a wooden bridge over a calm, reflective stream beside a brick mill.
Frits Thaulow, a Norwegian painter active during the late nineteenth century, is recognised for his technical mastery in depicting moving water. This work, dated 1897, captures a quiet scene featuring a wooden walkway extending over a calm, turquoise stream. The structure of the mill, rendered in brick and plaster, provides a solid architectural counterpoint to the fluid, shifting surface of the water below.
Thaulow spent much of his career travelling through Europe, settling for periods in France where he engaged with the techniques of the Impressionists. His approach to this subject demonstrates a focus on the interplay of light and reflection. The water surface acts as a mirror, catching the pale sky and the surrounding structures, while the brushwork remains controlled and precise. Unlike many of his contemporaries who favoured broken, rapid strokes, Thaulow employed a smoother application of paint to convey the density and transparency of the stream.
The composition relies on the diagonal line of the wooden bridge, which draws the eye from the left foreground towards the centre of the canvas. Two small figures are visible near the mill building, providing a sense of scale to the architecture. The palette is dominated by cool, aquatic tones, contrasted by the warm, earthy reds of the brickwork. This balance creates a sense of stillness, typical of Thaulow's observations of rural life and industrial structures in the French countryside. The work reflects his interest in the quiet corners of the world, where human activity meets the natural environment in a state of equilibrium.
