Pietro Longhi documents the 1751 arrival of a rhinoceros in Venice, capturing a crowd of masked carnival-goers observing the exotic animal.
Pietro Longhi, a Venetian painter known for his documentation of daily life, created this work to record a specific event in 1751. During the Venice Carnival, a female rhinoceros named Clara was brought to the city, drawing large crowds of curious spectators. Longhi captures the animal in a makeshift enclosure, where it feeds on hay while onlookers observe from behind a wooden barrier.
The composition features a group of Venetian citizens, many wearing traditional carnival masks such as the bauta and the moretta. These figures represent the social stratification of the period, with aristocrats and commoners alike gathered to witness the exotic creature. The inclusion of a small plaque on the wall, which provides details about the rhinoceros and the commission, serves as a factual anchor for the scene. The lighting is focused on the spectators, while the rhinoceros remains in the foreground, its heavy, folded skin rendered with careful attention to texture.
Longhi avoids idealisation, choosing instead to present the scene with a sense of detached observation. The painting functions as a visual record of the public fascination with natural history during the eighteenth century. The contrast between the masked, refined humans and the raw, physical presence of the animal creates a tension that defines the work. This piece remains a primary source for understanding the social customs and public entertainments of mid-eighteenth-century Venice. The artist's ability to balance the theatricality of the carnival with the mundane reality of the animal's captivity provides a clear view into the period's cultural interests.
