A detailed woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai depicting artisans at work in the Imado district of Edo, set against a serene river view.
This woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai captures a quiet moment within the Imado district of Edo, an area historically associated with the production of earthenware. Hokusai, a master of the Ukiyo-e tradition, shifts his focus here from the grand vistas of his later series to the daily activities of local artisans. The composition is divided between the foreground, where two potters are engaged in the shaping and finishing of ceramic figures, and the background, which offers a view of the Sumida River.
The figures are depicted with a focus on their physical posture and the tools of their trade. One artisan works on a small sculpture, while the other prepares a base or component, their movements suggesting a practiced rhythm. The setting is open and airy, with the roof structure providing a frame that draws the eye toward the riverbank. Small boats navigate the water in the distance, providing a sense of scale and local geography.
The colour palette is restrained, relying on soft ochres, muted greens, and the natural tones of the paper to convey the atmosphere of a workshop. The lines are precise, characteristic of Hokusai's ability to define form with minimal strokes. This work provides a glimpse into the material culture of the Edo period, documenting the specific craft traditions of the Imado kilns. By placing the artisans in a recognisable setting, Hokusai connects the act of creation with the environment of the city. The print functions as a record of both the labour involved in ceramic production and the geography of the riverfront, presented with the clarity and observational skill that define the artist's early career.
