A dreamlike depiction of a solitary figure floating above a snow-covered Russian village, capturing Chagall's signature blend of memory and fantasy.
Marc Chagall painted Over Vitebsk in 1914, shortly after his return to Russia from Paris. The work depicts a solitary, elderly man floating above the snow-covered streets of his hometown, Vitebsk. The figure, often identified as a wandering Jew or a beggar, carries a sack and holds a walking stick. His presence in the sky defies gravity, a recurring motif in Chagall's work that merges memory with fantasy.
The composition is divided between the mundane reality of the village below and the dreamlike state of the figure above. The architecture of the town, including the onion-domed church, is rendered with simplified forms and bold, non-naturalistic colours. The yellow of the church contrasts with the cool blues and whites of the winter scene, creating a sense of detachment between the floating wanderer and the grounded village.
Chagall utilised a combination of oil paint and gouache to achieve the textured, almost sketch-like quality of the surface. The brushwork is loose, prioritising emotional resonance over precise anatomical or architectural accuracy. This piece reflects the artist's preoccupation with his Jewish heritage and the displacement he felt during his travels. By placing a traditional figure in a suspended state, Chagall transforms a common street scene into a personal vision of history and identity. The work remains a primary example of how the artist integrated folklore and personal narrative into the visual language of early twentieth-century modernism.
