A detailed etching by James McNeill Whistler depicting the Hungerford Suspension Bridge on the River Thames, captured shortly before its demolition in 1860.
This etching by James McNeill Whistler captures the industrial character of the River Thames in London during the mid-nineteenth century. The work depicts the Hungerford Suspension Bridge, a structure designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel, which stood until its demolition in 1860 to make way for the current railway bridge. Whistler, who moved to London in 1859, found the riverfront a compelling subject for his printmaking practice. He focused on the interplay between the heavy engineering of the bridge and the smaller, traditional vessels navigating the water below.
Whistler employs a precise, economical line to define the skeletal structure of the bridge and the rigging of the barges. The composition balances the horizontal span of the bridge against the vertical masts of the boats, creating a sense of spatial depth without relying on excessive detail. The foreground remains relatively open, allowing the viewer to focus on the textures of the water and the varied forms of the river traffic. This print belongs to a period when Whistler was refining his ability to translate the atmospheric conditions of the Thames into the medium of etching. His approach avoids sentimentality, opting instead for a direct observation of the urban environment. The work provides a historical record of a vanished London landmark, rendered with the technical skill that defined his contribution to the etching revival of the era. By stripping away unnecessary elements, Whistler allows the structural geometry of the bridge to dominate the scene, reflecting his interest in the visual rhythms of the city.
