A charming, stylised postcard design by Vienna Secessionist Koloman Moser, featuring a minimalist tree and soft, flat colour washes.
This work by Koloman Moser is a characteristic example of the graphic output produced by the Vienna Secession movement at the turn of the twentieth century. Moser, a founding member of the Secession, applied his design sensibilities to various formats, including postcards and correspondence cards. The image features a simplified, stylised tree set against a flat, salmon-coloured sky, with a rolling green hill occupying the foreground. The composition is contained within a thin, dark border, typical of the period's interest in structured, geometric framing.
The inclusion of handwritten text at the bottom provides a personal dimension to the piece. It functions as a private communication, blending the artist's professional graphic style with the informal nature of a letter. The colour palette is restrained, relying on flat washes of pigment that emphasise the two-dimensional quality of the design. This approach reflects the influence of Japanese woodblock prints, which were widely studied by European artists during this era. The tree itself is rendered with a stippled texture, contrasting with the solid blocks of colour used for the sky and the hill.
Moser's work often sought to unify fine art and applied design. This postcard demonstrates his ability to create visually arresting imagery within a small, functional format. The balance between the organic form of the tree and the geometric slope of the hill creates a sense of order and calm. By stripping away unnecessary detail, Moser focuses the viewer's attention on the relationship between colour and form. This print offers a glimpse into the daily creative life of one of the most influential figures in Austrian modernism, capturing the aesthetic values that defined the Secessionist approach to graphic arts.
