A 1883 etching by Félix Hilaire Buhot, designed as the cover for his 'Japonisme' portfolio, featuring a scroll with a heron, dragon, and Japanese motifs.
This etching serves as the front cover for the portfolio 'Japonisme: Dix Eaux-Fortes', a collection of ten prints by the French artist Félix Hilaire Buhot. Produced in 1883, the work captures the fascination with Japanese aesthetics that permeated the Parisian art scene during the late nineteenth century. Buhot was a master of the etching medium, known for his experimental approach to plate tone and his ability to combine multiple vignettes within a single composition.
The image features a central scroll unrolling to reveal a collection of motifs associated with Japanese art. A heron stands amidst reeds, while a frog sits in the foreground. To the right, a ceramic vase is entwined with a dragon, a common decorative element in imported Asian goods of the period. A small monkey perches atop the scroll, and a series of birds are depicted in flight near the top edge. The inclusion of Japanese calligraphy on the left side of the scroll reinforces the thematic focus on Eastern influence. Buhot uses a delicate, precise line to define these forms, maintaining a sense of balance despite the varied elements.
Buhot often incorporated marginalia and secondary sketches into his prints, a technique that allowed him to explore different narratives within a single frame. This cover design functions as an introduction to his broader exploration of the Japonisme movement. The composition is intentionally flat, echoing the spatial arrangements found in traditional Japanese woodblock prints. The work provides a clear view into the artistic dialogue between East and West that defined the period. It is a fine example of the technical skill and thematic curiosity that Buhot brought to his printmaking practice, demonstrating his ability to synthesise diverse cultural references into a cohesive graphic design.
