A classic woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai depicting the coastal scenery of the Ryukyu Islands at dusk.
This woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai, titled Evening Glow at Jungai, belongs to the series Eight Views of the Ryukyu Islands. Produced during the artist's later career, the work demonstrates his mastery of composition and colour application within the ukiyo-e tradition. The scene depicts a rocky promontory topped with structures, overlooking a calm body of water where small boats navigate the shoreline. Hokusai employs a distinct perspective, placing the viewer at a distance to capture the scale of the craggy cliff face and the surrounding vegetation.
The colour palette relies on a balanced use of Prussian blue, which was becoming more accessible to Japanese printmakers at the time, alongside soft greens and earthy tones. The sky transitions from a deep blue at the top to a lighter hue near the horizon, suggesting the fading light of evening. The architectural elements, including the buildings and a small torii gate, are rendered with precise lines, providing a sense of human presence within the natural environment. The composition is structured around the vertical mass of the cliff, which acts as a visual anchor against the horizontal expanse of the water and sky.
Unlike his more famous series, such as Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, this set focuses on the Ryukyu Islands, a region that held specific cultural and political interest during the Edo period. Hokusai uses the format to explore the relationship between land and sea, employing simplified forms to convey the essence of the location. The print reflects the technical capabilities of the woodblock medium, with clear registration of colours and controlled line work throughout the image. It remains a representative example of Hokusai's approach to topographical subjects, prioritising clarity and atmospheric effect over strict realism.
