A classic woodcut by Lucas Cranach the Elder depicting the Crucifixion with the Virgin Mary and Saint John.
This woodcut by Lucas Cranach the Elder depicts the Crucifixion with a focus on the central figure of Christ, flanked by the Virgin Mary and Saint John the Evangelist. Cranach, a central figure in the German Renaissance, employs a precise linear technique characteristic of his printmaking output. The composition is balanced, with the figures arranged in a traditional devotional format against a simplified background that includes a distant cityscape.
Christ is shown with a crown of thorns, his body rendered with anatomical attention to the musculature and the weight of his posture. The Virgin Mary stands to the left, her head bowed in mourning, while Saint John stands to the right, his gaze directed upward. At the base of the cross, a skull rests upon the earth, a common memento mori symbol in Christian iconography of the period. The artist's signature, the winged serpent, appears in the lower right corner, a mark he used after receiving a coat of arms from Frederick the Wise in 1508.
The print demonstrates the technical control required for woodcut production during the early sixteenth century. The lines are clean and deliberate, defining the folds of the drapery and the contours of the figures without excessive shading. The sky is marked by subtle horizontal lines and clouds, providing a sense of atmosphere while keeping the focus on the primary subjects. This work reflects the religious climate of the era, where such prints were produced for private devotion and wider circulation among the faithful. The clarity of the image allows for a direct engagement with the subject matter, typical of the Northern Renaissance approach to religious narrative. The print remains a clear example of Cranach's ability to balance decorative elements with the solemnity of the scene.
