A classic woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai, depicting the Aoigaoka Falls with figures in a serene, natural setting.
Aoigaoka Falls in the Eastern Capital is a woodblock print from the series A Tour of Waterfalls in Various Provinces, produced by Katsushika Hokusai during the early 1830s. This series demonstrates the artist's interest in the physical properties of water and the integration of human activity within natural settings. The composition features a waterfall cascading into a pool, framed by the rounded, mossy embankments characteristic of the Edo period topography.
In the foreground, Hokusai depicts figures engaged in daily labour, providing a sense of scale and human presence against the geological features. The use of Prussian blue, a pigment that became accessible in Japan during this period, defines the water and the sky, creating a contrast with the green tones of the hillside. The architectural elements, including the tiled roofs of the structures, offer a geometric counterpoint to the organic forms of the trees and the falling water.
Technically, the print exhibits the precise line work and colour registration associated with the ukiyo-e tradition. Hokusai employs a vertical format to emphasise the height of the falls and the steepness of the terrain. The print captures a specific location in Edo, modern-day Tokyo, documenting the intersection of urban development and the natural environment. By focusing on the movement of the water and the textures of the stone and foliage, the artist provides a detailed observation of the site. This work remains a representative example of Hokusai's later career, where he moved away from portraiture to focus on the depiction of natural phenomena and regional geography.
