Frans Post

Frans Post was the first European artist to paint South American vistas from direct observation. He travelled to Brazil in 1637 with Johan Maurits van Nassau. While there, he worked with the scientist Georg Marcgraf, who recorded daily wind and rainfall. Post provided visual documentation for a colony developed for sugar production. His sketches were gridded for transfer to oil paintings, capturing a world entirely new to European eyes.

Portrait of Frans Post

Biography

His work is defined by a low horizon and vast, open space. Post frequently depicted sugar mills, known as engenhos. Some were powered by waterwheels while others used oxen. Although the historical reality of these plantations involved the harsh labour of enslaved people, Post presented these scenes with a calm, orderly atmosphere. In works like A Brazilian Landscape and Landschap in Brazilië, he used native flora and fauna to frame the composition.

Collectors value these prints for their status as both art and historical record. Post remained the primary source of Brazilian imagery in Europe for decades after his return to Haarlem. He produced Brazilian scenes from memory and sketches until his death in 1680. These works offer a unique perspective on the Dutch Golden Age. They provide a view of a specific moment when art and global trade first intersected in the Americas.
