Descripción
An atmospheric oil painting by Piet Mondrian, depicting a windmill along the Gein river in the Netherlands with expressive, textured brushwork.
Before his transition to the geometric abstraction for which he is widely recognised, Piet Mondrian produced a series of works depicting the Dutch countryside. Windmill in the Gein belongs to this period, capturing the rural environment along the Gein river near Amsterdam. The composition focuses on a single windmill, rendered with heavy, expressive brushwork that prioritises atmosphere over precise detail.
The palette is dominated by earthy tones, reflecting the damp, overcast conditions typical of the Dutch lowlands. Mondrian employs a sombre range of browns, ochres, and muted greens to define the structure of the mill and the surrounding terrain. Above, the sky is a turbulent mass of grey and white, with light breaking through in a way that suggests a fleeting moment of illumination. The reflection of this light on the water in the foreground provides a horizontal balance to the verticality of the windmill.
This work demonstrates Mondrian's early interest in the interplay of light and shadow. Rather than seeking a photographic representation, he uses paint to convey the mood of the location. The brushstrokes are visible and deliberate, showing the influence of late nineteenth-century Dutch painting traditions. The artist often returned to the Gein river to paint, finding in its quiet, repetitive forms a subject that allowed him to experiment with colour and composition. This specific piece offers a view into the formative years of an artist who would eventually strip away these representational elements to focus on the primary colours and grid structures of his later career. It remains a study of the Dutch environment, grounded in the observation of nature and the specific light of the region.

Windmill in the Gein - Piet Mondrian
Artist Biography
Piet Mondrian
Mondrian's move towards abstraction was gradual but decisive. He was influenced by Cubism after moving to Paris, but he ultimately distilled his art to its most essential elements. This radical simplification led to the birth of De Stijl, a Dutch artistic movement that sought universal harmony through pure abstraction. Mondrian believed that by reducing painting to its fundamental components – line, colour, and form – he could reveal a deeper, more spiritual reality.
Though he lived and worked in Europe for much of his life, Mondrian eventually settled in New York City during World War II. His final paintings, such as "Broadway Boogie Woogie," reflect the vibrant energy of his new urban environment. This iconic work, with its pulsating rhythms and dynamic composition, stands as a testament to Mondrian's enduring quest to capture the essence of modern life through the language of pure abstraction. His legacy continues to inspire artists and designers today.
