The exterior panels of the Triptych of the Temptation of St Anthony, featuring the Arrest of Christ and the Carrying of the Cross in grisaille.
These two panels represent the exterior shutters of the Triptych of the Temptation of St Anthony, painted by Hieronymus Bosch. When closed, these grisaille paintings depict scenes from the Passion of Christ, specifically the Arrest of Christ and the Carrying of the Cross. Bosch employs a monochromatic palette, using shades of brown, ochre, and grey to simulate stone sculpture, a common technique for the outer wings of altarpieces during the Northern Renaissance.
The left panel shows the arrest in the Garden of Gethsemane. Figures crowd the space, with Peter severing the ear of Malchus in the foreground. The composition is dense, filled with soldiers and followers, reflecting the chaotic nature of the event. The right panel depicts the Carrying of the Cross, where Christ falls under the weight of the timber while surrounded by a jeering mob. The figures exhibit the characteristic elongated proportions and expressive, often grotesque, facial features associated with Bosch's work.
Unlike the colourful and surreal interior of the triptych, which explores the psychological torment of the saint, these exterior panels provide a sober, meditative introduction. The use of light and shadow creates a sense of depth within the arched frames, drawing the viewer into the narrative. The figures are arranged in a way that suggests movement and tension, typical of the artist's approach to complex theological subjects. These panels demonstrate the technical skill of the workshop in handling oil glazes to achieve a sculptural effect on wood. The work remains a primary example of how religious art functioned in the early sixteenth century, transitioning from the public, sombre exterior to the private, visionary interior.
