A masterful etching by Ferdinand Bol, capturing a woman with a pear in a classic Dutch Golden Age portrait style.
Ferdinand Bol, a pupil of Rembrandt, demonstrates his mastery of the etching medium in this intimate portrait. The composition features a woman positioned behind a stone ledge, a device frequently employed by Dutch Golden Age artists to create a sense of proximity between the subject and the viewer. Her gaze is direct, meeting the observer with a calm, composed expression. In her right hand, she holds a pear, a subtle detail that adds a domestic quality to the scene.
Bol utilises a range of hatching techniques to define the textures of the subject's clothing and the surrounding architectural elements. The light source, coming from the left, illuminates the woman's face and the pear, while the background remains shrouded in shadow. This contrast, known as chiaroscuro, directs the viewer's focus toward the central figure. The fine lines of the etching needle capture the delicate folds of her head covering and the weight of the fabric draped over her shoulders.
As a practitioner of the Rembrandt school, Bol adopted many of the stylistic conventions of his teacher, particularly in his approach to printmaking. He favoured atmospheric depth and psychological presence over rigid formality. This work reflects the broader interest in genre portraiture during the seventeenth century, where everyday figures were rendered with the same technical rigour as historical or religious subjects. The print remains a fine example of the technical skill required to manipulate metal plates to achieve such tonal variation. It offers a glimpse into the domestic life and aesthetic preferences of the period, presented with the characteristic restraint of the Dutch masters.
