Descripción
A classic example of Neo-Impressionist pointillism, this 1890 work by Paul Signac captures the energy of a cycling race through a mosaic of light and colour.
Paul Signac, a central figure in the development of Neo-Impressionism, produced this work in 1890. The painting depicts a cycling track, a subject that reflects the era's fascination with modern leisure and sporting spectacles. Signac employs the technique of pointillism, which involves the application of small, distinct dots of colour that blend in the eye of the viewer rather than on the palette. This method allows for a luminosity that traditional mixing cannot achieve.
The composition is structured around the curve of the track, which draws the eye across the canvas. A crowd of spectators lines the perimeter, their forms rendered through short, rhythmic brushstrokes. The colour palette is dominated by bright yellows, greens, and blues, capturing the atmosphere of a sunny day at the velodrome. Signac uses these colours to define the spatial relationships between the track, the grassy interior, and the trees in the background. The sky is composed of a mosaic of light blue and white dots, creating a sense of shimmering air.
This work demonstrates the scientific approach to optics that Signac and Georges Seurat championed. By separating colours into individual components, the artist creates a surface that vibrates with light. The figures in the crowd are simplified, yet their postures and gestures convey the excitement of the race. The painting is a study in the application of colour theory to a contemporary scene, moving away from the spontaneous brushwork of earlier Impressionists toward a more calculated and systematic arrangement of pigment. The result is a static image that nonetheless suggests the speed and movement of the cyclists on the track.

Artist Biography
Paul Signac
Signac embraced Pointillism after encountering Seurat's *A Sunday on La Grande Jatte* in 1884. Captivated by the scientific approach to colour and light, he became a devoted follower and, later, a leading advocate of the style. Following Seurat's untimely death in 1891, Signac stepped into the role of the movement's champion, ensuring its continued influence on the avant-garde. His own works, such as *The Red Buoy* and *Antibes, Evening*, showcase his mastery of the technique, using vibrant dots of pure colour to create luminous and harmonious compositions.
Beyond his artistic output, Signac was also a dedicated writer and theorist. His book, *From Eugène Delacroix to Neo-Impressionism*, remains a seminal text on the subject, providing invaluable insights into the principles and philosophy behind Pointillism. Signac's passion for sailing also profoundly influenced his art, with many of his paintings depicting coastal scenes and harbours across France. He died in 1935, leaving behind a legacy as both a talented artist and a key intellectual force within the Neo-Impressionist movement.
