A seminal work of French Realism, this painting depicts a peasant labourer in a field, capturing the physical intensity of agricultural life.
Jean-Francois Millet painted The Sower in 1850, a work that captures the physical labour of rural life in nineteenth-century France. The composition focuses on a solitary figure striding across a ploughed field, his arm extended in a rhythmic motion to cast seeds. Millet employs a heavy, textured application of paint, which gives the earth a tactile quality. The figure is silhouetted against a pale, hazy sky, creating a contrast between the dark, grounded form of the labourer and the atmospheric background.
This painting belongs to the Barbizon School, a group of artists who moved away from the academic traditions of the time to focus on the realities of peasant life. Millet does not idealise his subject. Instead, he presents the worker as a monumental figure, his posture suggesting both exhaustion and determination. The muted palette of deep browns, ochres, and blues reinforces the connection between the man and the soil he works. In the distance, a smaller figure drives a team of oxen, providing a sense of scale and context to the vastness of the field.
When first exhibited at the Paris Salon, the work provoked debate due to its raw depiction of the working class. Millet chose to elevate the status of the agricultural labourer, treating the act of sowing with a gravity typically reserved for historical or religious subjects. The painting remains a primary example of the shift toward social realism in European art, where the focus moved from the lives of the elite to the daily experiences of ordinary people. The composition is balanced, with the diagonal line of the sower's body providing a sense of forward momentum that draws the viewer's eye across the canvas.
