A detailed 1854 etching by George Cruikshank depicting two scenes from the transformation sequence in the fairy tale of Cinderella.
This etching by George Cruikshank is a plate from his 1854 publication, 'Cinderella and the Glass Slipper'. Cruikshank was a prolific illustrator and caricaturist, known for his work with Charles Dickens and his contributions to various fairy tale collections. This specific work displays his characteristic approach to narrative illustration, utilising two distinct scenes on a single page to convey the progression of the story.
The upper scene depicts the interior of a kitchen, where a fairy godmother uses her wand to transform a pumpkin, rats, and lizards into a coach, horses, and servants. The composition is domestic and focused, with Cinderella observing from the doorway. The lower scene shows the exterior transformation, where the fairy godmother assists Cinderella in changing her simple kitchen attire into a gown suitable for the royal ball. The coach stands ready in the background, complete with footmen.
Cruikshank employs a fine, precise line quality typical of his etching technique. The cross-hatching provides depth and texture to the clothing and the architectural elements of the kitchen. His style is marked by a sense of theatricality, with figures posed in ways that suggest movement and dramatic intent. The inclusion of handwritten captions beneath each scene provides direct context, a common feature in his illustrated books. This print captures the whimsical nature of the fairy tale while maintaining the grounded, detailed aesthetic that defined mid-nineteenth-century British book illustration. The work reflects the period's interest in moralising tales and the popularisation of folklore through affordable, mass-produced print media.
