Descripción
A seventeenth-century Flemish genre painting by David Teniers the Younger. It depicts an elderly man making advances toward a young maid in a kitchen while his wife watches from a doorway.
David Teniers the Younger was a prolific Flemish painter known for his depictions of peasant life and interior scenes. This work, titled The Old Man and the Maid, depicts a common moralising theme in seventeenth-century Dutch and Flemish art: the unequal couple or the ill-matched pair. In this composition, an elderly man attempts to woo a younger woman in a cluttered kitchen or cellar. The man wears a feathered cap and reaches out to touch the chin of the maid, who kneels beside a large earthenware vessel.
The scene is filled with domestic objects that demonstrate the artist's skill in rendering different textures. To the left, a collection of copper pots and ceramic jugs sits near wooden barrels in a still-life group. The metallic sheen of the copper contrasts with the matte surface of the terracotta. A broom leans against a wooden bench on the right, while a small cat prowls in the shadows behind the central figures.
A narrative element appears in the background. An older woman, presumably the man's wife, peers through a doorway on the right. Her presence adds a layer of tension and humour to the scene, suggesting the discovery of the man's indiscretion. Teniers uses a restricted colour palette dominated by earthy browns, ochres, and greys. Light enters from an unseen source on the left, illuminating the central interaction while leaving the corners of the room in deep shadow. This use of light directs the viewer's attention to the facial expressions and gestures of the primary subjects.
