A detailed etching by Ferdinand Bol, depicting an officer in period military dress with characteristic Dutch Golden Age lighting.
Ferdinand Bol, a pupil of Rembrandt, produced this etching during a period when the influence of his master was most apparent. The work depicts a man in military attire, wearing a gorget and a plumed hat, his gaze directed towards the viewer with a sense of quiet confidence. The composition relies on the dramatic use of light and shadow, a technique Bol adopted from the Rembrandt studio to create volume and psychological depth.
The etching demonstrates a mastery of line and cross-hatching. Bol uses these marks to define the texture of the subject's long, curly hair and the metallic sheen of the armour. The background remains largely atmospheric, with diagonal hatching providing a sense of space without distracting from the figure. The subject is presented in a three-quarter view, a common format for seventeenth-century Dutch portraiture, which allows for a clear articulation of the sitter's features and costume.
Bol was a prolific artist in Amsterdam, known for his ability to replicate the tonal qualities of painting within the medium of printmaking. This particular work captures the fashion of the era, specifically the military dress that was a popular subject for artists seeking to explore themes of status and masculinity. The print is a fine example of the technical skill required to balance dark, dense areas of shadow with the lighter, more delicate lines of the face and lace collar. It remains a representative piece of the print culture that flourished in the Netherlands during the mid-seventeenth century, where such portraits were collected by a growing middle class interested in both art and the representation of contemporary figures.
