Descripción
An atmospheric 19th-century watercolour by David Cox, capturing a wide hayfield under a dramatic, moving sky with expressive brushwork.
David Cox was a leading figure of the Birmingham School and a prominent member of the Society of Painters in Water Colours. This work, produced during his later years, demonstrates his move away from the precise topographical style of his early career. He became increasingly interested in the atmospheric effects of weather and light on the British countryside. The use of rough, absorbent paper, often referred to as Scotch paper, allowed him to achieve the textured and grainy quality visible in the washes of the sky.
The composition is defined by a vast, active sky that occupies the majority of the frame. Cox used broad applications of grey, white, and pale blue to suggest a windy, overcast day. The clouds are rendered with a sense of movement, suggesting a storm may be approaching or passing. This focus on the elements rather than static scenery is a hallmark of his mature period. The land below is depicted with quick, suggestive strokes of ochre and umber, creating a sense of depth without relying on sharp outlines.
In the lower left, a figure on horseback provides a sense of scale and human presence within the wide environment. Further back, the activity of the hay harvest is indicated by small dabs of paint representing workers and a loaded wagon. Cox avoids fine detail in these figures, preferring to capture the general impression of labour in the field. The palette is restrained and naturalistic, favouring muted earth tones and cool greys to convey the specific damp atmosphere of a rural English summer day. His loose brushwork and interest in fleeting light conditions were often seen as radical by his contemporaries.
