A 1921 genre painting by Eugene de Blaas, depicting a young woman harvesting grapes in a serene, sunlit setting.
Eugene de Blaas, an Austrian-born painter who spent his career in Venice, produced this work in 1921. He is known for his depictions of Venetian life, often focusing on the daily activities of the local population. This painting captures a young woman gathering grapes, a subject that allows the artist to demonstrate his technical skill in rendering textures and light.
The composition places the subject against a low brick wall, with the sea visible in the distance. Her posture is relaxed, with one arm raised to reach the vine while the other holds a small cluster of fruit. The artist employs a soft, diffused light that illuminates the scene, drawing attention to the folds of the woman's skirt and the delicate features of her face. The colour palette remains balanced, with the bright yellow of her headscarf providing a contrast to the muted tones of the sky and the brickwork.
De Blaas was a professor at the Venice Academy, and his work reflects the rigorous training of the Academic tradition. He prioritised precise draughtsmanship and smooth brushwork, avoiding the visible marks favoured by his contemporaries in the Impressionist movement. The painting functions as a romanticised observation of rural labour, typical of the genre scenes that were popular among European collectors during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The inclusion of the wicker basket at her feet adds a narrative element, suggesting the ongoing nature of her task. This piece remains a clear example of the artist's ability to combine technical precision with a gentle, observational approach to his subjects.
