A classic genre painting by Eugene de Blaas, depicting a young woman carrying fruit baskets in a Venetian courtyard.
Eugene de Blaas, also known as Eugenio de Blaas, was a prominent figure in the Venetian school of painting during the late nineteenth century. His work frequently focused on the daily lives of the Venetian populace, often idealising the subjects with a polished, academic finish. This piece, The Fruit Seller, captures a young woman standing in a stone courtyard, carrying two woven baskets filled with produce.
The composition relies on the artist's characteristic attention to texture and light. The subject wears a traditional bodice and a deep blue skirt, which contrasts against the muted, earthy tones of the stone architecture behind her. Her expression is calm, and her posture is relaxed, reflecting the artist's tendency to present his subjects in a gentle, approachable manner. The straw hat provides a soft frame for her face, while the play of light across the fabric of her clothing demonstrates the technical precision typical of de Blaas's training.
De Blaas was born in Albano Laziale, near Rome, but spent much of his career in Venice. His paintings were popular among international collectors who sought depictions of Italian life that felt both authentic and aesthetically pleasing. He often utilised models from the local streets, placing them in staged settings that suggested a narrative without requiring complex action. The focus here remains on the figure herself, presented with a clarity that allows the viewer to appreciate the rendering of the baskets, the folds of the skirt, and the subtle warmth of the skin tones. This print captures the soft, naturalistic quality of the original oil painting, making it a suitable addition for those interested in nineteenth-century European genre scenes.
