A classic nishiki-e woodblock print by Suzuki Harunobu, depicting an intimate scene with a koto player from the Eight Fashionable Views of Edo series.
Suzuki Harunobu was a pioneer of the nishiki-e, or brocade print, which introduced full-colour printing to the Japanese woodblock tradition. This work belongs to the series Eight Fashionable Views of Edo, a playful adaptation of the traditional Eight Views of Xiao and Xiang theme. By transposing classical Chinese poetic motifs into the contemporary urban setting of Edo, Harunobu creates a dialogue between high culture and the floating world of the pleasure districts.
The composition depicts two figures in an interior setting, accompanied by a small black dog. The woman is positioned at a koto, a traditional stringed instrument, while her companion leans in, creating a moment of quiet intimacy. Harunobu is known for his slender, ethereal figures, which depart from the more robust proportions of his predecessors. The architectural elements, such as the shoji screens and the patterned wall, provide a structured backdrop that balances the organic curves of the figures and the maple branch visible through the window.
The print demonstrates the technical precision of the mid-Edo period. The use of colour is restrained, relying on soft tones to define the garments and the tatami mat flooring. The inclusion of calligraphy within a cloud-shaped cartouche at the top of the print integrates text and image, a common feature in ukiyo-e that invites the viewer to read the poem alongside the visual narrative. This print captures the aesthetic sensibilities of the era, where the daily lives of the urban population were elevated to the status of art. The work remains a clear example of Harunobu's ability to blend classical references with the fashion and leisure activities of his time, resulting in a composition that is both balanced and evocative.
