A Pre-Raphaelite triptych by Arthur Hughes, depicting scenes from John Keats's poem, The Eve of St. Agnes, framed in gilded ivy.
Arthur Hughes painted this triptych in 1856, drawing direct inspiration from the poem of the same name by John Keats. The work depicts the narrative of Madeline and Porphyro, capturing the moment of their clandestine meeting. The central panel shows Porphyro kneeling beside the sleeping Madeline, while the side panels illustrate the arrival and the subsequent escape of the lovers.
Hughes employs a triptych format, a choice that reflects the influence of medieval devotional art on the Pre-Raphaelite circle. The frame itself is an integral part of the composition, featuring gilded ivy leaves that wrap around the three arched openings. This decorative element provides a physical boundary for the narrative, while the inclusion of verses from the poem at the base of the central panel connects the visual imagery to the literary source material.
The painting demonstrates the characteristic attention to detail and colour associated with the Pre-Raphaelite style. The use of light, particularly the cool tones within the bedroom and the warm, golden hues of the frame, creates a contrast between the interior sanctuary and the external world. Hughes focuses on the emotional tension of the scene, avoiding overly dramatic gestures in favour of a quiet, intimate atmosphere. The figures are rendered with precision, and the textures of the clothing and the bed linens are handled with care. This work remains a clear example of the Victorian fascination with romantic literature and the revival of medieval artistic forms.
