A delicate steel engraving by Edward Goodall depicting the tragic Yorkshire legend of the Boy of Egremont.
This steel engraving by Edward Goodall depicts the tragic legend of the Boy of Egremont. The narrative concerns the heir to the lordship of Egremont, who perished while attempting to leap across the Strid, a narrow section of the River Wharfe in Yorkshire. The composition is a vignette, a characteristic format for nineteenth-century book illustrations, where the image fades into the surrounding paper rather than being contained by a rigid border.
Goodall, a highly skilled engraver, was frequently employed to translate the works of J.M.W. Turner into print. This particular piece demonstrates his ability to render atmospheric effects and delicate tonal transitions within a very small scale. The central figure is diminutive, dwarfed by the surrounding natural environment, which emphasises the vulnerability of the human subject against the power of the river. The distant, indistinct forms suggest the rugged terrain of the Yorkshire Dales, providing a sense of place that is both specific and evocative of the Romantic interest in local folklore and historical tragedy.
As a proof before letters, this print retains the original annotations in the margin, which provide insight into the production process of Victorian-era book illustration. The fine, precise lines of the engraving allow for a high degree of detail despite the small size of the central scene. The work captures the melancholic mood associated with the legend, using light and shadow to guide the viewer's eye toward the riverbank where the event occurs. It is a fine example of the technical proficiency required for commercial engraving during this period, where the artist had to balance narrative clarity with the limitations of the steel plate medium. The print remains a quiet, contemplative piece that reflects the intersection of literature, history, and visual art in the nineteenth century.
