A sun-drenched scene of coastal leisure, capturing bathers and changing huts through the expressive, light-filled brushwork of William James Glackens.
William James Glackens, a member of the group known as The Eight, produced this work during a period when his style shifted towards a lighter, more chromatic palette. The painting depicts a summer scene at a coastal resort, capturing the leisure activities of the early twentieth century. Glackens employs short, broken brushstrokes to render the movement of water and the play of light across the figures and the bathhouses.
The composition is divided between the solid, structured forms of the changing huts and the fluid, shifting surface of the water. Figures are scattered throughout the scene: some sit in conversation near the wooden walkway, while others are actively swimming or wading. The artist uses a high-chroma palette, particularly in the blues of the water and the greens of the grassy bank, to convey the warmth of a summer day. The bathhouses, painted in shades of white and cream, provide a neutral backdrop that allows the varied colours of the bathers' clothing to stand out.
Glackens was influenced by the French Impressionists, particularly Renoir, which is evident in his approach to light and his interest in contemporary social life. Unlike some of his contemporaries who focused on the grittier aspects of urban life, Glackens often turned his attention to scenes of recreation and middle-class enjoyment. This work captures a specific moment of social interaction, where the boundary between the land and the sea becomes a stage for human activity. The painting remains a clear example of his transition from the darker, tonalist works of his early career to the more decorative and light-filled canvases of his later years.
