A refined woodblock print by Suzuki Harunobu depicting the deity Tamonten in a contemporary Edo-period domestic setting.
This woodblock print by Suzuki Harunobu belongs to the series Tosei Shichi Fukujin, or The Seven Gods of Good Luck in Modern Life. Harunobu is credited with the development of nishiki-e, or brocade prints, which allowed for the use of multiple colours in a single composition. This work demonstrates his mastery of the medium through the delicate application of pigment and the refined line work characteristic of the mid-Edo period.
The scene depicts Tamonten, one of the Seven Lucky Gods, in a contemporary domestic setting. Rather than presenting the deity in a traditional, austere manner, Harunobu places him within a social interaction involving two women. One woman adjusts the garment of the deity, while the other sits nearby, observing the scene. The interior is defined by architectural elements such as sliding screens and a low table with a tea kettle, grounding the mythological figure in the everyday life of the eighteenth-century urban class.
Harunobu uses a muted palette to maintain a sense of harmony across the composition. The figures are rendered with the slender, graceful proportions that became a hallmark of his style. The inclusion of textile patterns, such as the crane motifs on the robe and the geometric designs on the floor cushions, adds visual texture to the print. The cloud-shaped cartouche at the top contains calligraphy, a common feature in ukiyo-e prints that integrates text with the visual narrative. This print offers a glimpse into the playful subversion of traditional iconography that defined much of Harunobu's output, where deities were frequently reimagined as fashionable figures in the pleasure quarters of Edo.
