A characteristic maritime scene by Alfred Wallis, featuring a white sailing ship in St Ives harbour, rendered in his distinctively direct and unadorned style.
Alfred Wallis, a retired Cornish fisherman, began painting in his late sixties using whatever materials were available to him. This work, executed on salvaged cardboard, displays the characteristic visual language of his practice. Wallis ignored traditional perspective, choosing instead to arrange elements according to their importance or his own memory of the harbour. The white sailing ship dominates the composition, rendered with a stark, graphic clarity that contrasts against the muted, monochromatic tones of the sea and sky.
His approach to the maritime subject matter is direct and unadorned. The lighthouse and the smaller vessels are positioned to create a sense of space that feels flattened, yet coherent within the logic of his own artistic vision. Wallis often used limited palettes, frequently relying on household paints, which contributes to the raw, tactile quality of his surfaces. The edges of the cardboard remain visible, reinforcing the object-like nature of the work. By painting on discarded scraps, he transformed everyday refuse into a record of the fishing industry that defined his life in St Ives.
This piece captures the essence of the Cornish coast through a lens of personal experience rather than academic training. The lack of formal technique allows the viewer to focus on the essential forms of the vessels and the harbour structures. Wallis did not seek to replicate the appearance of the sea, but rather to map the activity of the port as he understood it. His work remains a significant example of British folk art, appreciated for its honesty and the clarity of its execution. The composition is balanced by the placement of the lighthouse, which anchors the scene against the movement of the sailing ship.
