A refined woodblock print by Yashima Gakutei depicting the legendary poet Sotoori-hime, featuring delicate line work and traditional courtly attire.
This woodblock print by Yashima Gakutei depicts Sotoori-hime, a legendary figure from the early 5th century associated with the origins of Japanese poetry. The work originates from the 'Spring Rain Collection' (Harusame shū), a series of surimono prints. Surimono were privately commissioned works, often produced for poetry circles, and are characterised by their high production quality, including the use of metallic pigments and embossing.
The composition focuses on the figure of Sotoori-hime, rendered in a style that emphasises the grace of her posture and the elaborate nature of her courtly attire. The artist employs a refined line quality to delineate the folds of the fabric and the delicate features of the subject. Her robes are decorated with a repeating floral motif, which provides a rhythmic visual element against the flatter areas of the composition. The inclusion of calligraphic text, which integrates seamlessly with the visual design, is a hallmark of the surimono tradition, where the relationship between image and verse is central to the viewer's experience.
Gakutei was a prominent student of Hokusai and was known for his technical skill in the surimono format. His work often draws upon classical literature and historical figures, presenting them with a sense of quiet dignity. The palette is restrained, relying on muted tones that allow the subtle textures of the paper and the precision of the printing to take precedence. This print reflects the sophisticated aesthetic preferences of the Edo-period literati, who valued the synthesis of visual art and poetic expression. The work remains a fine example of the technical mastery achieved by Japanese printmakers during the early 19th century.
