Descripción
A detailed wood engraving by Winslow Homer depicting the busy shipyards of Gloucester, Massachusetts, where children play with toy boats near active construction.
This wood engraving by Winslow Homer captures a scene of industry and leisure in the coastal town of Gloucester, Massachusetts. Originally published in Harper's Weekly in 1873, the work demonstrates the artist's early career focus on documenting American life through the medium of illustration. The composition is divided into two distinct zones: the background features the active construction of a large wooden vessel, with workers positioned on scaffolding, while the foreground shows a group of children playing with toy boats amidst piles of discarded timber and wood shavings.
Homer employs a precise, linear technique characteristic of nineteenth-century wood engraving. The contrast between the heavy, dark forms of the ship and the lighter, textured ground creates a clear sense of space. The children, dressed in simple work clothes and straw hats, mirror the activity of the shipbuilders behind them, suggesting a continuity of maritime tradition within the community. The scene avoids sentimentality, instead offering a direct observation of the environment. The scattered wood chips and rough-hewn planks provide a tactile quality to the foreground, grounding the image in the physical reality of the shipyard.
This print reflects the artist's interest in the relationship between people and their environment, a theme that would occupy him throughout his career. By focusing on the mundane details of daily labour and childhood play, Homer provides a window into the social fabric of a nineteenth-century American port. The work remains a clear example of his ability to balance narrative detail with structural clarity, a skill honed during his years as a commercial illustrator before he transitioned fully to painting in oil and watercolour.

Artist Biography
Winslow Homer
Homer started as an illustrator for Harper's Weekly, covering the American Civil War. He was not a soldier. He was a correspondent, sketching camp life, sharpshooters, and prisoners with the detached accuracy of a reporter. The war drawings were published as wood engravings and brought him national attention. He was twenty-five.
He moved from illustration to painting without formal training, learning oil technique largely by observation. His early paintings are genre scenes of rural American life: children playing, women on croquet lawns, the kind of post-war pastoral that the public wanted. They sold well. He was dissatisfied with them.
In 1881 he went to Cullercoats, a fishing village in northeast England, and spent two years painting the women who waited on the shore for the fishing boats to return. The Cullercoats paintings are darker, more dramatic, and more serious than anything he had made before. The sea became his subject.
He moved to Prouts Neck, Maine, in 1883 and lived there, mostly alone, for the rest of his life. The Maine paintings, The Gulf Stream, Northeaster, Right and Left, are about the confrontation between human beings and the ocean. The figures are small. The water is enormous. The light is cold. He painted the sea the way Constable painted clouds: from direct observation, over years, until he understood its behaviour.
His watercolours, made on fishing trips to the Adirondacks, Florida, and the Bahamas, are freer and more experimental than the oils. Tropical sunlight and clear water brought out colours he did not use in Maine. He died in 1910, at seventy-four.
