A detailed 16th-century engraving by Jacques de Gheyn II, depicting a sergeant in period military attire amidst a camp setting.
This engraving by Jacques de Gheyn II depicts a sergeant in a dynamic, striding pose, characteristic of the late sixteenth-century Dutch interest in military costume and drill. The figure is dressed in the elaborate fashion of the period, featuring a slashed doublet, a stiff ruff, and a plumed hat. He carries a halberd over his shoulder, his posture suggesting movement across a rugged, uneven terrain. The background provides a wider view of a military encampment, with smaller figures engaged in various activities, which adds a sense of scale and narrative context to the primary subject.
De Gheyn was a highly skilled printmaker, and his work often demonstrates a mastery of line and texture. The engraving captures the sheen of the fabric, the metallic quality of the weaponry, and the atmospheric depth of the distant horizon. The Latin inscription at the base of the print, 'Ante ferox Signanus ago promptum agmen ad arma, Haudq parum debent parta trophaea mihi', translates roughly to a declaration of the sergeant's role in leading troops to arms and his claim to the trophies of war. This work is part of a series focusing on military figures, reflecting the contemporary obsession with order, discipline, and the professionalisation of the army during the Dutch Revolt.
The composition balances the central, foregrounded figure with the expansive, detailed background. The use of cross-hatching and varied line weights creates a sense of volume and form, typical of the technical precision found in de Gheyn's output. This print offers a clear window into the aesthetic and social concerns of the Dutch Golden Age, where military identity was frequently documented through such refined graphic works.
