A rare drypoint engraving by the Master of the Amsterdam Cabinet, depicting Saint Christopher carrying the Christ Child across a river.
This drypoint engraving depicts the legend of Saint Christopher, the patron saint of travellers, carrying the Christ Child across a turbulent river. The artist, known as the Master of the Amsterdam Cabinet (or the Master of the Housebook), was a significant figure in late fifteenth-century German printmaking. The work displays the characteristic soft, velvety lines achieved through the drypoint technique, which allows for a painterly quality rarely seen in contemporary copperplate engravings of the period.
Christopher is shown in a strained, forward-leaning posture, his weight supported by a thick staff that doubles as a balancing tool against the current. His heavy, layered garments are rendered with precise hatching, creating a sense of volume and texture. The Christ Child sits atop his shoulders, holding an orb, with a delicate halo radiating light. In the background, a hermit stands near a rocky outcrop, holding a lantern to guide the pair, a common narrative element in depictions of this subject.
The composition balances the physical exertion of the saint with the calm, ethereal presence of the child. The artist pays close attention to naturalistic details, such as the ripples in the water, the reeds at the riverbank, and the small birds in flight above. The use of drypoint creates a unique tonal range, where the burr of the copper plate holds ink to produce deep, dark shadows alongside fine, delicate highlights. This print is a fine example of the technical experimentation occurring in German workshops during the late Middle Ages, moving away from the rigid lines of earlier engraving styles toward a more fluid, expressive visual language.
