A fine etching by James McBey depicting the skyline of Rouen, France, in 1916, framed by two slender trees.
James McBey, a Scottish artist known for his mastery of the etching needle, produced this view of Rouen in 1916. The composition captures the French city from a distance, looking across the river towards the dense urban skyline. The spires of the cathedral dominate the horizon, rendered with fine, precise lines that define the architectural silhouette against a sparse, open sky.
In the foreground, two slender tree trunks frame the scene, acting as a vertical counterpoint to the horizontal expanse of the riverbank and the city beyond. McBey employs a restrained approach, allowing the white of the paper to represent the atmospheric quality of the day. The figures along the embankment are suggested through minimal marks, providing a sense of scale without cluttering the view. The etching demonstrates the artist's ability to balance technical control with a sense of spontaneity, a hallmark of his work during the early twentieth century.
McBey was largely self-taught, having developed his skills while working as a bank clerk in Aberdeen. His travels through Europe and the Middle East provided the subject matter for many of his most successful prints. This particular work reflects the interest in European urban centres that characterised the Etching Revival period, where artists sought to capture the character of historic cities through the medium of copperplate engraving. The print is signed and dated in the plate, consistent with his practice of documenting his travels. The composition remains open and airy, avoiding excessive detail in favour of capturing the essential mood of the location.
