Descripción
An expressive oil painting by David Cox depicting two boys fishing under a wide, cloudy sky. This work captures the atmospheric weather of the English countryside through loose brushwork.
David Cox was a leading figure of the Birmingham School and a precursor to the Impressionist movement. This work demonstrates his later style, where he moved away from the precise detail of his early watercolours towards a more expressive use of oil paint. The composition is dominated by a vast, turbulent sky. Thick applications of white and grey paint suggest the movement of clouds over a flat English countryside. These heavy textures create a sense of physical depth in the upper half of the canvas.
In the foreground, two young boys are positioned by the water's edge. One stands holding a long fishing rod while the other sits beside him. Their figures are rendered with quick, gestural brushstrokes that prioritise form and light over anatomical precision. To the left, dark reeds and marsh plants provide a heavy base for the image. A small flock of birds is visible in the middle distance, scattered across the lower half of the sky. Further back, a team of horses and a cart can be seen on the horizon, indicating the presence of rural labour.
Cox often painted outdoors to capture the immediate effects of weather. His technique involved a rough, textured surface that was unusual for the period. This approach allowed him to convey the damp atmosphere of the British climate. The palette is restrained, using earth tones and muted greens to create a sense of a breezy, overcast day. The artist used a palette knife or stiff brushes to apply the paint in certain areas, leaving visible ridges that catch the light. This painting is characteristic of the artist's interest in the relationship between the rural population and their natural environment.
