A modernist depiction of soldiers marching through a city street, rendered with rhythmic brushwork and bold colour.
Grace Cossington Smith painted Reinforcements: Troops Marching in 1917, during the height of the First World War. This work captures a scene of soldiers moving through a city street, observed by a crowd of civilians. The artist employs a post-impressionist approach, using thick, rhythmic brushstrokes to convey the movement and energy of the marching column. The composition is structured by the vertical lines of the soldiers and their rifles, which contrast with the horizontal mass of the building in the background.
The colour palette is bold and direct, featuring ochre, deep blues, and reds. Cossington Smith focuses on the collective experience of the war effort rather than individual portraiture. The figures in the foreground, including a small child and women in hats, provide a human scale to the event. The building behind the troops is rendered with simplified, blocky forms, suggesting the urban environment of Sydney where the artist lived and worked.
Cossington Smith is recognised as one of the earliest proponents of modernism in Australia. Her work often explored the relationship between light, colour, and form. In this piece, the application of paint is tactile and immediate, reflecting the urgency of the subject matter. The painting does not rely on traditional perspective, opting instead for a flattened, decorative arrangement that emphasises the pattern of the uniforms and the architecture. This approach allows the viewer to focus on the rhythm of the march and the atmosphere of the public gathering. The work remains a significant example of Australian war-time art, documenting the social impact of the conflict on the home front through a distinctly modernist lens.
