A 1644 etching and engraving by Pieter Nolpe, featuring a portrait of Pope Innocentius X surrounded by a chronological list of his predecessors.
This print by the Dutch engraver Pieter Nolpe depicts Pope Innocentius X, born Giovanni Battista Pamphilj. Created in 1644, the year of his election to the papacy, the work functions as both a portrait and a historical record. The central oval frame contains a bust of the Pope, rendered with the precise line work characteristic of seventeenth-century Dutch printmaking. He is shown in his ecclesiastical vestments, wearing the papal tiara.
The composition is structured as a broadside or informational sheet. Flanking the central portrait are two dense columns of text. These list the names, birthplaces, and lengths of service for every Pope from Saint Peter through to Innocentius X. The inclusion of these data points reflects the period interest in chronology and the systematic documentation of religious history. The text is set in a clear, legible typeface, typical of the printed ephemera produced in Amsterdam during this era.
Nolpe, active in Amsterdam, was known for his technical skill in etching and engraving. His work often involved the reproduction of portraits or the creation of topographical views. In this instance, the print serves as a commemorative document, likely intended for a public audience interested in the succession of the papacy. The visual balance between the portrait and the surrounding text creates a formal, authoritative appearance. The print provides a window into the dissemination of information and the visual culture of the mid-seventeenth century, where portraiture was frequently combined with textual information to provide context for the subject. The work remains a clear example of the intersection between portraiture and historical documentation in the Dutch Golden Age.
