A refined woodblock print by Suzuki Harunobu depicting the poet Sojo Henjo, featuring the artist's signature use of delicate lines and a balanced colour palette.
This woodblock print by Suzuki Harunobu depicts the monk and poet Sojo Henjo, one of the six figures celebrated in the Rokkasen series. Harunobu is credited with the development of nishiki-e, or brocade prints, which allowed for the use of multiple colours in a single composition. This work demonstrates his mastery of the medium, utilising a refined palette to balance the architectural elements of the veranda with the natural forms of the lotus pond below.
The composition is divided into two distinct zones. The lower section shows the monk standing on a wooden structure, his red robes providing a visual anchor against the muted tones of the building and the water. Above him, a cartouche contains a portrait of the poet alongside his calligraphy, a common device in Japanese printmaking to link the visual image with the literary source. The lines are delicate and precise, characteristic of Harunobu's approach to the human figure and his ability to convey a sense of quiet contemplation.
Harunobu's prints often focused on themes of classical literature and contemporary life in Edo-period Japan. By placing the historical figure of Sojo Henjo within this specific setting, the artist invites the viewer to consider the intersection of poetry and visual art. The use of negative space and the simplified forms of the lotus leaves reflect the aesthetic values of the period, where clarity and balance were prioritised over excessive detail. This print serves as an example of the technical sophistication achieved by Japanese printmakers during the mid-eighteenth century, where the collaborative process between artist, carver, and printer resulted in works of exceptional quality.
