A 1889 Neo-Impressionist oil painting by Maximilien Luce, depicting a woman arranging her hair through the precise application of colour dots.
Maximilien Luce, a prominent figure within the Neo-Impressionist circle, produced this work in 1889. The painting demonstrates his engagement with the divisionist technique, a method involving the application of small, distinct dots of colour to form an image. By placing contrasting hues side by side, Luce allows the viewer's eye to blend the colours optically, creating a sense of luminosity that traditional mixing on the palette cannot achieve.
The subject is a woman seated in a private interior, captured in the act of arranging her hair. Her posture is relaxed, with arms raised to frame her head. The composition is balanced by the presence of a small statuette on the mantelpiece to the left, which provides a secondary point of interest. The background consists of patterned surfaces, rendered with the same methodical application of paint as the figure, which helps to unify the pictorial space.
Luce was closely associated with Georges Seurat and Paul Signac, yet his work often retained a more robust, tactile quality than that of his peers. In this piece, the light appears to filter through the room, catching the contours of the figure and the folds of the fabric draped across her lap. The palette is composed of soft blues, pinks, and ochres, which work together to create a calm, domestic atmosphere. The brushwork remains visible upon close inspection, revealing the artist's disciplined approach to his craft. This painting offers a clear example of how Neo-Impressionist artists applied scientific theories of colour to intimate, everyday scenes, moving away from the spontaneous brushwork of earlier Impressionists in favour of a more structured and calculated aesthetic.
