A seminal Dada assemblage by Kurt Schwitters, featuring a complex arrangement of wood, metal, and paint that redefines the boundaries of the canvas.
Kurt Schwitters developed the term Merz to describe his unique approach to art, which involved the collection and reassembly of discarded materials. This work, New Merzpicture, is a prime example of his practice of elevating everyday debris into a formal composition. By incorporating wood, metal, and paint, Schwitters moves beyond the traditional boundaries of the canvas, creating a relief that occupies physical space.
The composition is dominated by a large, circular wooden form that anchors the visual field. Within this structure, Schwitters arranges various geometric shapes and found objects, including a small wheel, to create a sense of mechanical rhythm. The application of paint is varied, ranging from flat blocks of colour to textured, weathered surfaces that reveal the history of the materials. The inclusion of a small red cross and other graphic elements adds a layer of visual tension, typical of the Dadaist rejection of conventional aesthetic order.
Schwitters sought to create a synthesis of art and life, where the distinction between high art and refuse was intentionally blurred. His work reflects the chaotic environment of post-First World War Germany, where the reconstruction of society mirrored his own process of assembling fragments into a new, albeit fragmented, whole. The work does not rely on traditional perspective, instead favouring a flat, layered arrangement that forces the viewer to engage with the physical reality of the objects themselves. Through this method, Schwitters transformed the detritus of urban life into a coherent, if unconventional, visual language.
