A late-period ink painting by Katsushika Hokusai depicting a monk with tea whisks, characterised by fluid brushwork and a minimalist composition.
This work by Katsushika Hokusai captures a solitary figure, a monk engaged in the humble trade of selling chasen, or ceremonial tea whisks. Executed in the final years of the artist's life, the piece demonstrates his mastery of economy in line and form. The monk sits with a relaxed posture, his robes rendered in fluid, expressive ink washes that suggest both weight and texture. The tea whisks, splayed out before him, are depicted with minimal strokes, yet they remain instantly recognisable to those familiar with the Japanese tea ceremony.
The composition is sparse, typical of Hokusai's late-period paintings where he moved away from the dense detail of his earlier woodblock prints. The negative space surrounding the figure allows the viewer to focus on the monk's weathered expression and the calligraphic quality of the ink. Above the figure, Hokusai has included an inscription in his own hand, which integrates the text into the overall visual balance of the hanging scroll format. The brushwork is confident and loose, reflecting the artist's long experience with the medium of ink on paper.
This painting provides a glimpse into the everyday life of Edo-period Japan, focusing on a transient moment rather than a grand historical event. The muted palette, dominated by ink tones with subtle hints of colour, aligns with the aesthetic of the literati tradition that Hokusai engaged with during his later years. The work is mounted in a traditional style, with decorative silk borders that complement the understated nature of the central image. It remains a clear example of Hokusai's ability to imbue a simple subject with character and presence through precise, controlled brushwork.
