Descripción
A serene woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai depicting a traveller on horseback in a snow-covered landscape, from the series A True Mirror of Japanese and Chinese Poems.
This woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai belongs to the series A True Mirror of Japanese and Chinese Poems, known in Japanese as Shiika shashin kyo. The series draws inspiration from classical poetry, pairing visual imagery with verses that evoke specific moods or historical narratives. In this composition, Hokusai depicts a traveller on horseback accompanied by a footman, both navigating a winter landscape. The scene is defined by the heavy accumulation of snow on the pine branches and the ground, which creates a stark contrast against the deep blue of the sky and the water.
Hokusai employs a vertical format to emphasise the height of the pine tree, which arches over the figures like a natural canopy. The horseman, seen from behind, wears a large straw hat, while the attendant carries a box, suggesting a journey of some distance. The artist uses a refined colour palette, relying on the interplay between the white of the snow, the earthy tones of the horse, and the cool blues of the background. The print demonstrates Hokusai's mastery of the woodblock medium, particularly in his ability to convey texture, such as the soft, fluffy quality of the snow and the rough bark of the trees.
This work reflects the artist's interest in the relationship between human figures and their environment. By placing the travellers within a quiet, frozen setting, Hokusai captures a moment of stillness. The composition is balanced, with the verticality of the tree providing a counterpoint to the horizontal movement of the figures. This print is a characteristic example of Hokusai's later career, where he moved away from the more crowded urban scenes of his earlier work to focus on the atmospheric qualities of the natural world.

Artist Biography
Katsushika Hokusai
Katsushika Hokusai was a visionary Japanese artist whose influence stretched far beyond his lifetime. Born in 1760 in Edo (modern-day Tokyo), Hokusai became world-renowned for his mastery of ukiyo-e woodblock prints and paintings. His most iconic work, The Great Wave off Kanagawa, is instantly recognisable across the globe and embodies his lifelong fascination with the power of nature. Hokusai’s ability to capture the dynamic tension between beauty and impermanence is a hallmark of his style, deeply rooted in Japanese aesthetics and Buddhist philosophy.
Throughout his prolific career, Hokusai produced thousands of prints, sketches and illustrated books. He continually reinvented his style and identity, even adopting over 30 different artist names as his work evolved. His bold compositions, innovative use of perspective and striking colour palettes redefined Japanese printmaking. Hokusai's famed series Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji showcases not just technical mastery, but a spiritual reverence for landscape and everyday life. His work depicted everything from serene rural scenes to mythological creatures and bustling cityscapes.
Hokusai's legacy transcended Japan, profoundly shaping Western art during the 19th century through the movement known as Japonisme. Artists like Monet, Van Gogh and Whistler drew direct inspiration from his compositions and sensibilities. Today, Hokusai is celebrated not only as one of Japan’s greatest artists, but as a bridge between Eastern and Western visual culture. His art continues to captivate modern audiences with its fluid lines, narrative depth and timeless exploration of the human connection to nature.
