A detailed sixteenth-century etching by Nicolaas Hogenberg depicting court officials in the ceremonial procession of Emperor Charles V.
This etching by Nicolaas Hogenberg forms part of a series documenting the ceremonial procession of Emperor Charles V. The work captures a specific segment of the imperial retinue, identified by the Latin inscriptions at the base as Corynophori, Virgiferi, Hostiarii, and Ianitores. These figures represent the various court officials and guards responsible for the order and security of the imperial household during public appearances.
The composition is organised in a frieze-like manner, typical of sixteenth-century processional prints. The figures are mounted on horseback, moving in a rhythmic line across the frame. Hogenberg employs a precise etching technique to define the armour, the harnesses of the horses, and the heraldic elements positioned at the top of the plate. The upper section features a decorative cartouche containing French text, flanked by two distinct coats of arms, which provide genealogical context to the procession.
As a visual record of the sixteenth-century court, the print offers insight into the display of power and the rigid hierarchy of the Habsburg administration. The artist focuses on the uniformity of the procession, using repetitive forms to convey the scale and discipline of the imperial entourage. The inclusion of heraldry and Latin labels suggests that the series was intended for an audience interested in the political and social structures of the era. Hogenberg, who was active in Mechelen, produced these works to commemorate the significant events surrounding the reign of Charles V. The print remains a valuable document for historians studying the material culture, fashion, and ceremonial practices of the early modern period in the Low Countries.
