Descripción
A classic Neo-Impressionist marine scene by Georges Seurat, capturing the Normandy coast through precise, systematic dots of colour.
Georges Seurat painted this view of the Normandy coast during the summer of 1888. It is one of a series of six canvases he produced while visiting the small fishing port of Port-en-Bessin. The work demonstrates his systematic application of colour theory, utilising the technique known as pointillism. Small, distinct dots of pigment are placed side by side on the canvas, allowing the viewer's eye to blend them optically from a distance.
The composition is structured with geometric precision. The horizontal line of the harbour wall and the vertical masts of the boats create a stable, balanced arrangement. Seurat captures the specific light of the English Channel, using a palette of cool blues, soft greens, and warm ochres to define the cliffs and the water. The sky is rendered in lighter, airy tones, contrasting with the more saturated colours of the grassy foreground and the stone buildings.
Unlike the spontaneous brushwork of the Impressionists, Seurat's approach is calculated and deliberate. He sought to bring a scientific rigour to painting, focusing on the interaction of complementary colours to create luminosity. The scene is devoid of human activity, which directs the viewer's attention entirely to the atmospheric conditions and the architectural forms of the harbour. The painted border, which Seurat often included on his frames, is present here, extending the colour field beyond the central image. This work remains a clear example of his mature style, where the application of paint is entirely subservient to the artist's desire for order and clarity in the representation of light.

Harbour at Port-en-Bessin at High Tide - Georges Seurat
Artist Biography
Georges Seurat
Seurat's most famous work, *A Sunday on La Grande Jatte*, exemplifies his revolutionary approach. Unveiled at the eighth (and final) Impressionist exhibition, its rigid, almost statuesque figures, built from countless tiny dots, caused a sensation. While some critics derided its perceived coldness and artificiality, others recognised the dawn of a new era. Seurat sought to bring scientific rigour to artistic expression, studying colour theory and optics to maximise the visual impact of his paintings.
Beyond *La Grande Jatte*, Seurat's oeuvre includes captivating seascapes, portraits, and scenes of Parisian nightlife, all rendered with his signature Pointillist technique. Works such as *Bathers at Asnières* and *The Circus* demonstrate his continued exploration of colour, light, and form. Though his career was brief, Georges Seurat's innovative approach to painting cemented his place as a pivotal figure in Post-Impressionism, influencing generations of artists to come.
