A detailed sixteenth-century etching by Nicolaas Hogenberg depicting a ceremonial procession of the Holy Sacrament during the coronation of Emperor Charles V.
This etching by Nicolaas Hogenberg depicts a segment of a ceremonial procession, specifically focusing on the transport of the Holy Sacrament. Hogenberg, a Flemish artist active in the early sixteenth century, is recognised for his detailed documentation of contemporary events and courtly life. This work belongs to a series illustrating the coronation of Emperor Charles V in Bologna in 1530, a significant political and religious event of the period.
The composition features a canopy supported by poles, sheltering the monstrance containing the Eucharist. The figures are rendered with precise attention to sixteenth-century dress, including doublets, hose, and heavy cloaks. The artist employs a clear, linear style typical of the period's printmaking, where the focus remains on the narrative clarity of the procession. The inclusion of Latin text at the base provides context, identifying the participants as members of the Bolognese nobility and medical doctors, reflecting the social hierarchy present at the event.
Technically, the work demonstrates the capabilities of etching as a medium for recording complex public spectacles. The figures are arranged in a horizontal sequence, moving across the frame, which creates a sense of forward motion. The architectural elements, such as the canopy, are drawn with geometric accuracy, contrasting with the more fluid, organic forms of the figures and the horse. This print offers a window into the visual culture of the Renaissance, capturing the intersection of religious devotion and secular pageantry. The monochromatic nature of the etching emphasises the draughtsmanship and the careful observation of costume and gesture, providing a historical record of the ceremonial practices that defined the era.
