A detailed pen and ink drawing by Gerrit Lamberts, capturing a quiet courtyard scene at Amstel 22-24 in Amsterdam.
Gerrit Lamberts was a Dutch draughtsman known for his meticulous documentation of Amsterdam architecture during the early nineteenth century. This work, depicting the view of Amstel 22-24, captures a quiet, domestic corner of the city. The composition focuses on a narrow courtyard or alleyway, framed by brick buildings with characteristic Dutch gables and shutters.
Lamberts employs a delicate pen-and-ink technique, supplemented by subtle grey washes to define the play of light and shadow across the cobblestones and masonry. The scene is populated by a single figure, a child standing near a doorway, which provides a sense of scale and daily life to the architectural study. A small tree, bare of leaves, reaches towards the sky, adding a vertical element to the otherwise horizontal focus of the courtyard.
This drawing belongs to a broader body of work by Lamberts, who spent much of his career recording the appearance of Amsterdam streets and buildings. His approach is observational and precise, prioritising the accurate representation of structural details over atmospheric embellishment. The work offers a glimpse into the urban environment of the period, documenting the textures of brickwork, the arrangement of windows, and the simple, functional nature of the city's residential spaces. The use of wash creates a soft, monochromatic palette that emphasises the quietude of the scene. By focusing on these specific locations, Lamberts preserved the visual history of the city, providing a record of structures that have since been altered or demolished. The drawing remains a clear example of the topographical tradition in Dutch art, where the artist acts as both observer and chronicler of the built environment.
