A refined woodblock print by Suzuki Harunobu depicting the deity Fukurokuju with a shamisen player, showcasing the delicate colour palette of nishiki-e.
This woodblock print by Suzuki Harunobu depicts Fukurokuju, one of the seven gods of good luck in Japanese mythology, alongside a woman playing a shamisen. Harunobu is credited with the development of nishiki-e, or brocade prints, which allowed for the use of multiple colours in a single composition. This work demonstrates his mastery of the medium, employing a delicate palette and precise line work to define the figures and their surroundings.
The composition is balanced, with the elongated head of Fukurokuju providing a vertical counterpoint to the seated woman. The background features a screen decorated with a crane and pine trees, traditional symbols of longevity in Japanese culture. The inclusion of the shamisen player introduces a secular, contemporary element, typical of the Ukiyo-e genre, which often blended mythological subjects with the fashions and pastimes of the Edo period.
Harunobu's figures are characterised by their slender proportions and graceful postures. The print captures a quiet, domestic moment, contrasting the scholarly, aged deity with the youthful musician. The use of soft, muted tones creates a sense of harmony within the interior space. The text at the top of the print provides poetic context, linking the visual elements to the broader theme of the series. This print is an example of the sophisticated aesthetic that defined the mid-Edo period, where the boundaries between the divine and the everyday were frequently blurred through artistic representation.
