A delicate woodblock print by Suzuki Harunobu, featuring a woman looking out over a coastal scene, taken from the Picture Book of Spring Brocades.
This woodblock print by Suzuki Harunobu originates from the second volume of the Picture Book of Spring Brocades, or Ehon haru no nishiki. Harunobu is credited with the development of nishiki-e, or brocade prints, which allowed for the use of multiple colours in a single composition. This innovation transformed the medium, moving away from the limited palettes of earlier eras.
The scene depicts a woman standing at the threshold of a room, looking out toward a coastal view. The composition utilises a clean, linear approach to define the architecture of the veranda and the sliding doors. Harunobu employs a delicate touch, focusing on the grace of the figure and the atmospheric quality of the water and sky. The inclusion of birds in flight and distant boats provides a sense of scale and distance, typical of the period's interest in combining human subjects with natural settings.
The colour palette is restrained, relying on soft tones that complement the paper texture. The lines are precise, characteristic of the high technical standards maintained by the carvers and printers who collaborated with Harunobu. The text integrated into the upper portion of the print functions as both a narrative element and a visual component, balancing the composition. This work reflects the aesthetic values of the Edo period, where the depiction of daily life and poetic sentiment were central to the output of ukiyo-e artists. The print demonstrates the artist's ability to create a sense of quietude through minimal means, avoiding excessive detail in favour of clarity and balance.
