A detailed Mannerist engraving by Johann Theodor de Bry, depicting the allegorical theme of love overcoming worldly conflict and military power.
This engraving by Johann Theodor de Bry, titled De Liefde overwint alles (Love Conquers All), belongs to the tradition of Northern Mannerist printmaking. De Bry, a member of a prominent family of engravers and publishers, demonstrates the technical precision characteristic of the period. The composition is divided into two distinct registers, a common device in allegorical prints of the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries.
The upper section features Cupid, depicted with his traditional blindfold and bow, perched upon a globe. Beside him stands a female figure, likely representing a personification of virtue or constancy, holding a spear. Between them sits a heart placed upon an altar, symbolising the central theme of the work. The lower section shows a figure navigating turbulent waters, surrounded by discarded instruments of war and worldly power, such as swords and armour. This imagery reinforces the classical concept that love possesses a power superior to military might or material wealth.
Technically, the work employs fine cross-hatching to create volume and shadow, particularly within the clouds and the drapery of the figures. The lines are controlled and precise, reflecting the high standards of the De Bry workshop. The figures exhibit the elongated proportions and graceful, artificial poses typical of Mannerist art, which prioritised stylistic sophistication over strict naturalism. The inclusion of celestial elements and the atmospheric treatment of the clouds suggest a cosmic scale for the allegory. This print serves as a visual representation of the popular Renaissance trope regarding the omnipotence of affection, translated through the lens of Dutch and Flemish print culture. It remains a clear example of how classical themes were adapted for contemporary audiences through the medium of copperplate engraving.
